Meeting

For a moment I smell the freshness of wind and water; to me it smells like summer. A time I am looking forward to, when I can lay in the warm sand, lost, belonging to nobody, not even myself. But, that isn’t today.

As the wind violently whips my hair against my neck and waves crash to shore, I can’t help but to be mesmerized by the pastel horizon and wish that today will be the day; as I have wished many times that I’ve come to the water’s edge. And that I won’t think about the butterflies that dance in my belly, when I catch the sight of you.

It’s been a long awaited many moons, for this time to come; perhaps something we should have done sooner rather than later. Walking in the direction you said you’d be, I am not as nervous as I thought I’d be. One step at a time, forward, while my untamed thoughts run like a screaming child in the sand. “This is really happening. Look away. Look at him. Look away. Okay. Okay, this is really happening, we are going to meet.”

Once small in the distance, you become life size as we stand face to face. I recognize you, yet I don’t and as the wind kicks up your scent, something is familiar, but I can’t put my finger on it. Responding to something I said, your lips part and I hear your voice for the first time; I’ve never heard you speak. I can’t but look at you when you talk; your voice, your expressions, your animation, the way you joke. In this moment, I forgot that I just met you, so focused on the newness and conversations, until pleasantries end in smiles and twilight and stars guide us home.

  1. I love your picture- it is gorgeous. And the prose poetry to go with it is very beautiful.
